Beckoning Light by Alyssa Rose Ivy - Review & Giveaway

Welcome to Reading It All's stop on the Beckoning Light and Perilous Light tour hosted by Enchanted Book Tours.

Title: Beckoning Light
Author: Alyssa Rose Ivy

Synopsis: As Charlotte steps through the gate, she has a strong feeling that nothing will ever be the same again.

Moving back to South Carolina after three years away, Charlotte knows she's going to have to face people from her past and adjust to a new high school, but she's completely unprepared for what else waits for her in Charleston.

Drawn through an old garden gate, Charlotte discovers a hidden world where she meets Calvin, a boy to whom she is inexplicably attracted. As Charlotte is pulled deeper into this hidden world, it's up to her older brother Kevin to rescue her. No matter how hard Kevin tries, the rescue depends upon Charlotte fighting her intense feelings for Calvin while mastering a set of abilities that she has only just discovered she possesses.

My thoughts: This was a really great book. In the beginning it reminded me of The Secret Garden, with a gate they weren't allowed to go through. When Charlotte finally went through the gate I realized that is where the similarity ends.

Charlotte is a very lovable character. She is shy and unassuming. She can never seem to figure out why boys are showing her attention. When Charlotte goes through the gate into another world she starts to change. I saw her story as one of growth. Charlotte gains so much confidence as the book goes on. She becomes stronger and takes action. I love that.

Kevin is a typical older brother, he wants his little sister to stretch her wings, just not with boys. He may be a little self-absorbed at times but he still will do anything for Charlotte. At times I didn't enjoy the parts of his story. Maybe it was because of his personality.

I liked reading about all the other characters, too. I really like Monty. He is a "cool" uncle. He doesn't set tons of rules but you can tell he is very caring and only wants the best for Charlotte and Kevin. Liam is amazing. If this was a team picking book, I would be Team Liam. He is sweet, and he really likes Charlotte (or at least I imagine he does). Calvin is kind of a mess to me. He loves Charlotte but he keeps upsetting her. I would say more but then there would be spoilers. Just know that he is frustrating.

The plot and setting of this book is really interesting to me. I love the explanation of the world through the gate. All the bright colors and different animals sound beautiful. The plot drew me in. Charlotte thinks she is saving this mysterious world, in reality Monty, Kevin, and Liam have to come to save her.

Beckoning Light was a really fun read. I enjoyed reading it and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, Perilous Light.
