Knee Deep by Jolene Perry - Review

Welcome to Reading It All's stop on the Knee Deep tour presented by Tribute Books!

Title: Knee Deep
Author: Jolene Perry
Publisher: Tribute Books
Publish Date: April 25, 2012

Synopsis: Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He's her soul mate. He's more uptight every day, but it's not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she's adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he'll start to be the boy she fell in love with. She won’t give up on someone she’s loved for so long.

Luke is her best friend, and the guy she hangs with to watch girlie movies in her large blanketopias. He's the guy she can confide in before she even goes to her girlfriends, and the guy who she's playing opposite in Romeo and Juliet. Now her chest flutters every time he gets too close. This is new. Is Ronnie falling for him? Or is Juliet? The lines are getting blurry, but leaving one guy for another is not something that a girl like Ronnie does.

Shawn’s outbursts are starting to give her bruises, and Luke’s heart breaks as Ronnie remains torn. While her thoughts and feelings swirl around the lines between friendship and forever, she’s about to lose them both.

My Thoughts: Jolene Perry has fast become one of my favorite Young Adult authors. She has an amazing way of writing about issues that are very serious. Knee Deep  is no exception to this. Abusive relationships are so difficult, and Perry did such a wonderful job of showing that in Knee Deep.

Ronnie is just a regular teenage girl. She goes to school, spends time with her friends, and she thinks she has found the love of her life. I love her different style of dressing in the book. She really seems like a free spirit who just got trapped in a bad relationship. Every time she made an excuse for Shawn I was shaking my head. Perry did such a perfect job of showing how the victim of abuse suffers. She showed the self-esteem problems, the guilt, the lies, and the denial with Ronnie's character.

Shawn is a jerk. I'm being a bit harsh, I guess, but he was just mean and controlling the whole time. His character was so well written, though. I was ready to give that guy a bit of his own bruising medicine.

Luke is pretty awesome. He is a funny guy who just seems to flit from girl to girl. Never taking things too seriously, but he was a great friend to Ronnie. His sense of style cracked me up. By far my favorite was his Power Puff Girl shirt. As his feelings for Ronnie surface he is such a sweetheart.

I loved every moment in this book. Luke's funny personality, Ronnie's dad bursting in to the rescue, the notebook full of firsts. Everything was just amazing. Jolene Perry is a very talented writer, and Knee Deep is a must read for everyone out there.
