Alex Siegel, author of Apocalypse Cult is guest posting today.
I didn't teach myself how to write. Like all professional skills, it requires formal education. In my case, I started with some creative writing classes at a local college. Then I spent ten years doing workshops and writing groups. I made some great friendships during that period. These days, I focus exclusively on my own work rather than critiquing others, but I'm still trying to hone my skills. I'm my own worst critique, and I don't stop editing until I'm completely happy with the result. Whenever possible, I try to pick up subtle tricks from other writers. Even reading a newspaper article can be educational. I think the key to being successful at any career is to never stop learning
