Destiny Unhinged - Review

Title: Destiny Unhinged
Author: Kimber Shook
Published: June 10, 2012

Synopsis: VANESSA anxiously waits for her birthday, a boyfriend and some much needed excitement in her dull and boring life. She soon finds herself torn between two guys. Well, I guess that is what she would call them, even though one is a dead Alien King. MAX, a dead alien who is trapped in limbo between two worlds and longs for Vanessa, his destiny, to help him home and become his Queen. He offers her his world, his heart and his future. TOBY, a good looking guy who shows an interest and a desire to be with Vanessa, has confessed that he too has a destiny that he's meant to be with another. However, it’s a destiny he doesn’t want. The connection that Vanessa has with Max is strong but the desire she has for Toby may be even stronger. Will she accept what Destiny has in store for her or find a way to escape to find one all on her own? Purchase on Kindle / Smashwords /Diesel Ebooks / Barnes and Noble

My Thoughts: I think that the premise for Destiny Unhinged was good. Kimber Shook took the girl trying to choose between two boys scenario and added some extra elements. Instead of vampires and werewolves we have an alien king and what we assume is a human boy (I have my doubts).

Vanessa was an interesting girl. She seemed a little flighty but I guess who wouldn't be with two guys trying to make them their destiny, right? Sometimes she was super spunky and told them just how she felt. She was quick to forgive and mostly easy going though.

Max was a bit overwhelming. He just popped in whenever he wanted and took over. It made him a little unlikable. Then you have Toby who seems to have a lot of secrets as the book goes on. It sure made it tough to pick a team to root for. I have my doubts about Toby and his family, I think, in the next book a lot of light will be shown on who they truly are.

I struggled with this book. I think my biggest issue was the present tense. It just really isn't how I personally like my books. That isn't to say that others who like writing in present tense won't enjoy this book. This book just wasn't my style.

About Kimber Shook I'm a huge sci-fi fan. I love all the paranormal, fantasy and sci-fi genres, of course, when romance is thrown in, it just makes it even better. I grew up with a desire to write. Now being considered a middle-aged woman I have decided I'm running out of time. I stopped taking for granted the amount of time I have left to live and take matters into my own hands by actually working on a dream. Writing a novel, Destiny Unhinged. It's a great feeling to say I'm not just waiting for life to come to me, but rather I'm going after it and not letting go.

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Bookish Confessions

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. I haven't posted in such a long time!! I have been very behind in everything, including book reviews. With my oldest two in school I'm hoping I'll be able to find a little more time to write up reviews and memes. I have missed so many good Top Tens!! I'll be looking forward to Rewind Tuesday later this year. This week's topic is my Top Ten Bookish Confessions.

1. I don't use bookmarks at all. I lose them too much. I used to be able to memorize quickly what page I was on, and sometimes I can still do that. For the most part though, I fold down the corner of the page!

2. I crease the spines of books. I didn't even know that was such a big no no until my sister-in-law pointed out that she hates having the spines of her books creased. I guess I've never gotten the hang of half opening a book to read it so that it stays pretty. My books are well worn and loved.

3. I swore I would never ever read Harry Potter, Twilight, or 50 Shades of Grey because there is just too much mass hysteria about them. I've now read all of them, and they are amazing!

4. If a book doesn't catch me in the first few pages (sometimes paragraphs) I usually won't continue. I'm sure I have missed plenty of great books this way, but I like a story that jumps out and grabs you. This of course doesn't pertain to my review books, I try to read the entire books of all reviews.

5. I've only read a very tiny percentage (like 15%) of the books on my Kindle, and yet I always want more. Most of the ones I've read are review books.

6. On a similar note, my Kindle has over 600 books on it.

7. I will usually only read a book with a catchy cover. I know they say "Don't judge a book by it's cover" but I totally do. It can be redeemed if it has an amazing title or great reviews, but I usually don't make it past covers.

8. If a book I am reviewing has all 5 star reviews on Amazon, and I consider it a 4 star or less I hate posting my review. I always feel like maybe I'm just not getting the book. Honesty can be hard if it affects someone's ratings.

9. I have signed up for tons of 2012 Reading Challenges, and I am not doing a good job of keeping up with them. I have to get busy!

10. I hate books made into movies, yet I am always picturing what a book will be like as a movie. My disappointment comes when the director just doesn't read my mind and get it right.

Yay for finally doing a Top Ten Tuesday!! What are your Bookish Confessions? Let me know in the comments or leave me a link to your Top Ten and I'll stop by! Next week I'll be posting my Top Ten Books On My Fall TBR List.

Crashers by Lindy S. Hudis - Review

Title: Crashers
Author: Lindy S. Hudis
Publisher: Bettie Youngs Book Publisher
Publish Date: April 27, 2012

Synopsis: Fraudulent car accidents is a multi-million dollar racket, involving unscrupulous medical providers, personal injury attorneys, and the cooperating passengers involved in the accidents and who also receive a portion of the illegal proceeds. Such is the fate of newly engaged, Nathan and Shari, whose joy is tempered by the dark cloud of mounting debt. A chance encounter with a stranger in whom Shari confides her troubles, proves fortuitous: he tells her of a get-rich-quick scheme that will put her and her fiance on easy street. Seduced by the chance to move from hard times to good times in no time, she finds herself acting as a stuffed passenger the victim in a staged auto accident. Shari gets her payday, but getting out and breaking free of the insurance fraud underworld will take nothing short of a miracle. A modern day cautionary tale that uncovers how the innocent get lured into the scheme of cappers and hammers.

My Thoughts:I was a little unsure what to expect from Crashers. Truthfully I wasn't sure how interested I would be in insurance fraud, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. Lindy S. Hudis took the world of insurance fraud and turned it into an excited fictional read.

Shari and Nathan were an interesting couple. Starting out struggling, but seemingly still on the rise to fortune. When their whole world crashed down you got a major look into who they were as people. Let me tell you they had some major flaws.

Bryce was a great character. He started so mysterious, but as the book went on you got to see into his thoughts about everything. He was pretty laid back about how illegal their work of insurance fraud was.

Louise was my favorite. I was rooting for her the whole way. She was a very brave woman and cop, to take on the huge ring surrounding the insurance fraud. She seemed very intuitive and very self reliant.

This book was very non-stop. There was constantly some element of thrill going on the whole time. I never once found myself bored and waiting for something interesting to happen. Hudis did an excellent job with this book!
